Which outdoor infrared heater suits your patio, balcony, or outdoor room? This buying guide provides concrete answers on how much power you need, which model suits your situation, and what it costs to operate. No marketing – just straightforward facts and purchasing advice.
An outdoor infrared heater works completely differently from a conventional electric or fan heater. This guide helps you choose the right model for your situation. We cover how infrared heat works, how much power you need, and what it costs to operate. We cover Opranic’s three outdoor models and provide concrete purchasing advice whether you have a small balcony, a large patio, or an outdoor room.
Why an outdoor infrared heater works better than conventional electric heating
A conventional electric heater or fan heater warms the air. Outdoors, that air disappears with the next gust of wind. You pay for energy that blows away.
An outdoor infrared heater emits infrared radiation that is absorbed directly by the body, just like the sun’s warmth on a clear winter day. You know the feeling: minus ten degrees in the mountains, but you are warm in the sun. It is exactly the same principle. No warm-up time, no drafts, and no energy that disappears upward.
Opranic’s IR-X Carbon Black technology operates at 2.4 micrometers. This is the optimal wavelength for human absorption. The body consists of approximately 80% water, and water absorbs this wavelength efficiently. The result is immediate, even heat that feels natural and neither glares nor stings.
Infrared heater: how does infrared heat work?
Short-wave, medium-wave, or long-wave: which provides the best heat?
Energy efficiency: 96% converted to heat
Opranic heaters convert up to 96% of supplied electrical energy directly into radiant heat. Only 2 to 3% is emitted as faint light. No warm-up time and no energy losses via air that is heated and then blows away.
This results in an operating cost of approximately 4.60 kr per hour at full power of 2,300 W and Swedish electricity prices of approximately 2.00 kr/kWh. At lower power levels, the cost decreases proportionally. Power level 3 on the THOR S70 (1,600 W) costs approximately 3.20 kr per hour.
Because you heat the body directly and not the air, you can maintain a lower ambient temperature and still experience comfort. This is the difference between turning on full power and hoping it gets warm, and directing exactly the right amount of heat where it is needed.
How much power do you need – and where should the heater be positioned?
Power requirement per square meter
A rule of thumb for outdoor infrared heaters: calculate 150 to 200 W per square meter in a sheltered space and up to 300 W per square meter in a more exposed location. A 2,300 W heater covers 15 to 25 square meters in normal outdoor conditions.
For a balcony of 6 to 8 square meters, a unit of 1,800 to 2,300 W is sufficient. For a patio of 20 to 30 square meters, you usually need two units. If you have an outdoor room or pergola that is sheltered from wind, a 2,300 W heater covers up to 25 to 30 square meters.
Installation and placement
Ceiling mounting provides the most even heat distribution and is the most common choice for patios and pergolas. Wall mounting works excellently for balconies and outdoor areas. Recommended installation height is 1.8 to 2.5 meters with a 30 to 50 degree downward tilt toward the seating area.
Never place a wall-mounted heater directly facing a window. Glass reflects infrared radiation and reduces efficiency. Aim the heater toward the surface and people it is intended to heat.
Safety distances to follow: 100 cm in front of the heater, 40 cm to the sides, and 20 cm to the ceiling for wall mounting. These distances apply from flammable materials.

Opranic’s outdoor models – which option suits you?
All three models share the same IR-X Carbon Black technology, the same carbon element manufactured in Japan, and the same engineering philosophy. What you choose is the format and mounting, not compromises on heating performance.

Opranic: a Swedish brand with 20 years of infrared engineering expertise
Opranic is a Swedish company with offices in Stockholm. We have not just selected components and assembled a system. For more than 20 years, we have developed every part: the carbon element, the reflector, the housing, and the electronics, all optimized and tested together for Northern European outdoor conditions.
The carbon element is manufactured in Japan and meets specifications that most suppliers never even test for. It is not a single good element that makes the difference. It is the system that delivers heat where it should, with minimal loss and maximum comfort.
It is this engineering philosophy that has earned Opranic awards in Sweden and internationally, with recognition from Aftonbladet, The Independent, The Telegraph, Inspekto, Testson, Testat.nu, and Hantverksproffset, and hundreds of positive reviews on Amazon in Europe – and which makes Opranic one of the most recommended brands for outdoor infrared heaters.
Best infrared heater in test 2026: why Opranic delivers the most heat per watt
Safety, maintenance, and lifespan
An Opranic heater requires minimal maintenance. Wipe the reflector and steel grille when needed. Check that the cable and plug are intact before each season. That is all. No service agreements and no moving parts that wear out.
IP65 rating means full protection against rain, water jets, and dust. An outdoor infrared heater with IP65 can remain in a sheltered location throughout the outdoor season. We still recommend bringing the THOR S70 inside during winter if it is not in use.
Good for allergy sufferers: infrared heat does not disturb the air and spreads neither dust nor pollen. This is a noticeable difference compared to fan heaters and convectors.
THOR S70 and PRO V70 have a 3-year warranty. NOVA V50 has a 2-year warranty. All models have electronic overheat protection.
Summary – which choice suits you?
If you have a patio, balcony, or outdoor room and want flexible portable heat – choose THOR S70. If you want a permanent discreet installation for home use – choose NOVA V50. If you have a commercial outdoor space or outdoor dining area – choose PRO V70.
All three are outdoor infrared heaters of the highest quality. They share Opranic’s IR-X Carbon Black technology, 20 years of engineering expertise, and a promise that the heat will reach you, not the air above you. This is the difference you notice from the first second.
Electricity prices based on the Swedish Energy Agency’s statistics for Swedish households including grid fees and taxes (approximately 2.00 kr/kWh). Actual costs vary with local prices and selected power level.
