Infrared heating panels for wall and ceiling

An Opranic infrared heating panel warms the people and surfaces in the room directly. It works in silence, with no fan and no moving parts. The panels are 2.5 to 4 cm deep and hang on the wall like a picture, and the P5 also mounts on the ceiling.

They suit rooms you want warm at certain hours: the home office during the day, the bathroom in the morning, the bedroom in the evening.

Sizing

How many watts does the room need?

As a starting point, allow around 100 W per square metre in an insulated room with a 2.4 m ceiling. A 450 W panel then covers about 4 to 6 m² and a 900 W panel about 9 to 12 m². Older buildings, large windows and higher ceilings need more, and larger rooms are better served by several panels.

Running cost
€0.34per hour

A 900 W panel at full output, with electricity at €0.38 per kWh. A room thermostat switches the panel off once the room is warm, so the real cost depends on the room and on the hours you heat.

What to know before you buy an infrared panel

How much electricity does an infrared panel use?

A panel draws its rated output while it heats. A 900 W panel uses 0.9 kWh in an hour at full output, about €0.34 at €0.38 per kWh. With a thermostat the panel switches off once the room is warm, so the consumption follows the heat loss of the room, the temperature you choose and the hours you heat. The panels turn about 98 to 99% of the electricity into heat. That figure describes the conversion and is no promise of a lower bill. See the running cost guide.

Infrared panel with thermostat: built in or external?

The P6 Hybrid has a built-in thermostat: turn the dial and the panel holds the level you set. The P5 and the P7 need an external room thermostat, sold separately. The plug-in thermostat OT50 sits between the socket and the panel. For weekly schedules or open-window detection, choose a compatible control with those functions, and place the sensor away from the panel so it measures the room. Read the thermostat guide.

Can an infrared panel go in the bathroom?

Yes. The P5 and the P7 are rated IP44 and the P6 is rated IP24, which means protection against splashing water. Mount the panel outside the splash zone and follow the manual and the electrical installation rules that apply where you live. An optional towel holder fits the P5 700 and the P5 900. Read the bathroom guide.

Wall or ceiling: where should the panel go?

The P5 mounts on the wall or on the ceiling. The P7 mounts on the wall, horizontally or vertically, and the P6 mounts horizontally on the wall or stands on optional feet. Place the panel no more than 3 to 4 m from the area you want to warm, with a clear path between the panel and the people in the room. Read the placement guide.

Infrared panel as a freestanding heater

The P5 and the P6 can stand on the floor on optional feet and move between rooms. For the P5 there are two feet kits, one for the 300 W model and one for the 450, 700 and 900 W models. The P7 is made for wall mounting only, because the glass front adds weight.

Advantages and limits of infrared panels

The advantages: silent heat with no fan and no moving parts, a slim panel that keeps the floor clear, and a standard plug in place of pipework. The limits: the surface gets hot and must not be touched or covered, furniture in front of the panel blocks the heat, and a larger room needs several panels. These panels are only suitable for well-insulated spaces or occasional use.

How is the panel installed?

Fix the supplied bracket to the wall with fixings that suit the surface, slide the panel into place and lock it. Screws and wall plugs are included. Plug the 1.9 m cable into a socket and the panel is ready. Keep combustible materials at least 30 cm from the front and 10 cm from the edges of the panel.

Warranty and certification

The P5 and the P7 come with a five-year warranty on the panel and the heating element and are certified by TÜV Süd. The P6 comes with a three-year warranty. All panels are CE marked and have built-in overheating protection. Opranic has worked with infrared heating since 2009.
